Frequently asked questions

How much deposit do I need for a first home in New Zealand?
Most lenders look for 20% of the purchase price, but lending above 80% is possible for a limited share of bank lending, often from 10% and sometimes 5%. First Home Grant and KiwiSaver withdrawals can form part of your deposit.
Can I use my KiwiSaver for my first home?
If you have been contributing for at least three years and are buying your first home to live in, you can usually withdraw your KiwiSaver savings less $1,000. Your provider confirms the exact amount available.
How much can I borrow as a first home buyer?
Lenders assess your income against your living costs, other debt repayments and a test interest rate well above the advertised rate. Our first-home estimate applies that same style of assessment to give you an indicative range.
Is this financial advice?
No. Everything on this site is indicative, general information only. Figures are estimates based on the details you provide and publicly available or supplied rate information, and are not guaranteed. If you need advice, speak with an appropriately licensed financial adviser.
Will anyone contact me?
Only if you ask us to. At the end of the calculator you choose whether you would like a mortgage adviser to get in touch, or whether we simply keep your details and let you know later if your position is worth revisiting.

Indicative, not an approval
